When Captain Bridges was absent, I’d begun to take his place in the command structure, although in a totally unofficial way. It was simply understood by all concerned that in his absence, I spoke for him. I was painfully aware that doing so placed me in a position of quasi-authority over a couple of my counterparts, and I had to tread very carefully.
