“Yes, yes you could,” it said in my mind.
“You’ve come a long way, just to run out of gas here.”
Surprise must have shown on my face, or
perhaps he just knew that people were surprised to hear him speak
the way he spoke to their minds, because he spoke in my head
again.
“Don’t be afraid, Peter,” he said. “Your
instincts about me are correct. I am not here to hurt you. You are
right, I am here to warn you.”
I nodded somewhat enchanted by his voice in
my mind, and hoping that he would continue.
“Like you, I mourn the death of your
parents," his voice whispered in my head. “It is for this reason
that I am here now. I swore to your parents a long time ago that
should this day ever come that I would tell you what they wanted me
to tell you of their journey. I swore to them that I would protect
you as much as you would let me, and that should your heart desire
it, that I would help you to continue to fulfill their mission. Is
that what you want, Peter Passenger?”
