Chapter 39

When they reached the door to the room, Nate said, “Grandma, why don’t you and Grandpa go in first. I’ll be right behind you.”

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson pushed the door all the way open and entered the room. Quentin saw that there were two beds in the room, and Mrs. Wilson went straight to the bed by the window. Nate’s mother had several wires and tubes attached to her, but Quentin recognized her as the woman he and Nate had encountered when Nate had gone to retrieve his things from his house a couple of years earlier—and later at the trial. He also noted that her hands were handcuffed to the rails on each side of the bed.

The woman looked up when Mr. and Mrs. Wilson walked closer to the bed and said, “Mom, Dad. What are you doing here?”

“We got word that you were ill, so we came down to visit,” Mrs. Wilson said. “And look who we brought with us.”

Nate’s mother looked in their direction, spotted Nate and Quentin, raised her voice and said, “What are theydoing here?”
