“It wouldn’t do for a new partner in a major law firm to have a DUI on his record,” I said.

“Yeah.”

“I guess I was a romantic at heart, even as a teenager,” I said. “I really expected that first time—it was the summer before I went to Harvard—to be something special. All my friends could talk about was doing ‘it’, but when I finally did ‘it’, all I could think was, ‘What was all the fuss about?’”

Mrs. Odum said, “You mean that, as writers of romance novels might say, you didn’t feel the earth move and hear the angels singing. That sort of thing.”

“Yeah.”

“And do they now?” Dan said.

“Oh, yeah. That first time with Rion was an absolutely shattering experience, and it just keeps on getting better.”

“He was the first?” Dan said.
