Chapter 14

“I’m sure lover boy will wait for you.” Zoe wiggled her eyebrows at me, her perkiness beginning to get on my nerves. She definitely didn’t seem to be reacting like someone who was about to see the scene of a crime. Maybe others got excited about that kind of stuff? Who knew? Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

We reached the crumbling brick wall, and I paused for a moment to catch my breath and ready myself for whatever was on the other side.

I don’t know what I expected, but everything was quiet when I clambered over the wall. In fact, it was eerily quiet, almost as if there was an invisible wall blocking out all the noise from the outside of the little section of the meadow where the bodies were buried.

Hearing Zoe panting and grumbling as she came over the wall, I turned and offered up my hand to help her down.

“Thanks,” she mumbled before she stepped past me and stopped dead in her tracks.
