Chapter 22

You are next, Brianna Winterwood. The Goddess’s voice came to me, and although her words were terrifying, there was something soothing about her tone. Do not fear. I shall be with you.

“Brianna! Brianna! Wake up!”

The familiar sensation of Zoe shaking me awake pulled me from my dreams. I came up with a rush as though I had hit the surface of a deep body of water.

“What? What is it?” I gasped as I scrambled to get a grip on something, anything that would tell me I was awake and okay.

“Do you hear that?” Zoe asked even as I opened my eyes and blinked several times in an attempt to get used to the gas light that was flooding the room.

I definitely heard it. The low, droning tone of bells ringing. It danced in through the open window.

“What is it? What’s going on?” I asked as Zoe hurried to the window and pulled back the curtains to look outside.

“I have no idea, but they only ring the bells for something serious,” Zoe said.
