Chapter 23

For a moment, nothing happened.

“See! I told you she’s not a Winterwood.” Keeya sounded more than a little excited to be right.

Then the room fell silent save for the familiar click of the lock as it opened.

“You were saying?” Luci threw a scowl at Keeya before turning her attention back to me.

I lifted the front cover of the book just to prove that it was really open and Zoe took a step forwards.

As if the book sensed her presence, it suddenly snapped back shut, and the lock slid back into place with another click.

“Give me the key,” Keeya insisted, holding out her hand.

Luci and Zoe turned to her just as I did.

“No way.” I shook my head.

“If you want to be sure that this is the real deal, we need to see if it’ll open for me or anyone else in this room besides you,” Keeya pointed out.

I reluctantly held up the pendant, never slipping the necklace off, and Keeya came to crouch beside me.

She placed the pendant in the lock, and we waited.
