Chapter 38

“It’s not mine.”

“Huh?” I groaned again as I sat up, “I don’t have a clue where mine even is.”

“It’s in your top draw,” Zoe huffed before rolling over as though she was now the annoyed one.

I leaned over on my elbow and pulled the draw open just as the ringtone died.

Inside I found my Samsung, cold and alone in the otherwise empty draw.

“The battery is almost full,” I mused as I grabbed the phone and unlocked it.

“I kept it charged for you.” Zoe finally sat up and looked at me with a sheepish expression

“Thanks.” I smiled back at her even as my phone began to ring all over again.

I glanced down at the phone in my hand to see that it was Nicola.

My heart skipped a beat for a moment.

“It’s Nicola.” I glanced up at Zoe again. “Does she...you know...think I’m dead?”

“With the way she’s been calling, I’m going to say no,” Zoe replied, and her cheeks began to flare almost as if she was embarrassed. “I answered a couple of times at first and told her you were sick.”
