It was interesting that he didn’t ask about Gautier’s family. I’d look into it, just on the off chance they might decide they wanted my kid, even though they were estranged from his egg donor.

“Go take your shower. I’ll lay out some clothes for you.”

“Okay, Dad. You…you won’t try to take Gunther away from me, will you?”

“No.” I was surprised when he came to me and wrapped an arm around my waist.

“Thank you. I know he’s not important—”

“He’s important to you, just like Sam is important to me.”

He let me go and went into his bathroom, still clutching the bear. And in spite of my assurance, he locked the bathroom door.

It seemed like the kid was a chip off the old block.

That bear, though…I had to chuckle. According to The Boss, Perry had scanned it. All he’d found was the wedding band tied around its neck. Maybe one day I’d casually mention the secrets tucked away inside the old teddy bear.
