“Thank you, sir.” I was already developing my own plan of action. I’d leave a message for Matheson to contact me. He could keep an eye on the girl until she left town. “I’m glad you came to us with this information, rather than just writing us off.”

“I’ve always found your organization most competent.” Senator Franklin smiled tightly and crushed out his cigarette in one of the ashtrays that were scattered around the balcony. “How is our mutual friend?” he asked, changing the subject.

“He’s doing fairly well. I saw him earlier today, and I tried to convince him it would be a good idea if he left the business.”
