Chapter 21

Alex bowed his head and turned.

“Okay, because I can’t give you anything but friendship. Better if you know that.”

For Daniel, it was like receiving a punch in the stomach, even if he already knew it. It wasn’t as if he believed Alex could reciprocate. It was only a hope, or a feeling…but it was clearly wrong.

“Yes, I know that,” he managed to mumble after a few seconds of silence. He stared at his feet with his hands in his pockets, not knowing if he had to add something or simply turn around and walk out the kitchen.

The silence stretched out for a few moments, until Alex turned with a forced smile.

“Well, then…friends, right?” he murmured.

“Sure, friends.” Daniel answered with a hint of a smile, despite the sadness.

“Do you want to tell me about Matt now?” Alex asked, even if he didn’t sound convincing.

“No.”

Then Daniel left the kitchen. It would have been too much to bear.
