Kevin had just reached his two friends, bringing two drinks for them, and had caught them in the middle of their utterances. He looked back to where they stared, and his mouth opened in amazement.

“Not really,” Alex murmured, closing his eyes with a sigh. “There. I lost him. Game over. There’s nothing else I can do,” he whispered in a choked voice, because that was the precise moment when he suddenly realized what he’d lost.
