Chapter 18

Eli walked down towards the water and when he saw Micha he stopped. Micha stood downwind in the small winding creek, away from the beginning of their encampment presumably so that the horses could drink the water closer to their tents and far from the bathing location. In the vanishing sunlight, Micha’s naked form appeared darker than Micha’s normal olive skin tone. Eli smelled cinnamon and suspected that Micha mixed oil with natron to cleanse himself.

He moved closer to the river’s edge and as MIcha arrived within earshot spoke.

“Dinner is ready, Micha.”

Micha tilted his head so his profile made an outline against the darkening sky, rather than face Eli completely. Eli bit his lip as an inappropriate thought entered his mind. Micha stood straight and arched his backside. “Do you wish to bathe too?”

Eli hesitated. He wanted to cleanse himself of the sand and sun from the last few days. Then he smiled. He realized that Micha had invited him to bathe with him.
