Spy Games

“You have to give him a command,” Vincent explained. “Nikoloz, nod again if we’re right.”


He nodded, and the doctor drew up the correct dose. “But how do I administer it? Should it be IV, IM, subcutaneous, what?”


“For crying out loud, doc, just jab it in him somewhere!” Vincent wanted to pick the man up and shake him good.


“We’ll try intravenous, then.” The doctor found a vein in Nikoloz’s left arm and slowly injected the drug. He peered into Nikoloz’s face. “I have no idea how long this will take to work.”


Nikoloz let out a loud groan and doubled over.


“Not long, apparently,” Vincent said, hurrying to his partner’s side.


Nikoloz put both hands to his head. His breathing, which had slowed to almost normal during the drive, now sped up again. In between groans, he gasped as though he were running full tilt.


“Kolya, say something, for God’s sake!” Vincent put a hand on his partner’s shoulder.
