Chapter 57

“I got off the counter and just made a run for it. I was so ashamed. I went into Dad’s room and hid in the closet. I heard his footsteps as he approached and he opened the door and stared down at me.”

Brian kept his eyes closed and Matt’s memory played out in front of him so clearly.

“He asked me why I ruined his tea, but saw my misery and scooped me up. I don’t remember the rest. He probably made another cup and let me sip on it.”

His brother became quiet after that. Brian’s head started to sweat against Matt’s leg but he didn’t pull away, finding comfort in the prickly hairs stinging his forehead. Matt must’ve thought he’d fallen asleep, because he picked up his textbook again and started reading.

Eventually Brian pulled away and settled back on the pillow, getting comfortable on the bed. “At least we have a few memories to keep with us.”
