Thankfully, though, Maxi was an evil villainess and didn’t cry long. She snuffled and blew her nose horribly loudly into the toilet paper and then turned her attention to the mirror and trying to get all the smudgy mascara off.

“Sorry,” she mumbled. “It’s just, you know. They’ve never put her in a coma before.”

“It’s okay,” he mumbled.

“And I feel really crappy because I was out with Josh Felton—you know, ginger Josh, from the drama department—I went out with him yesterday and then Mum had to take Alice to hospital and Demi stayed up with Alice until like two in the morning when they put her under and he was shattered when he got home and Demi’s never shattered, and…”

She sniffled dangerously, and Tab patted her arm. “Um,” he said. “I’m sure it’s just a precaution. To like, let her rest and focus on getting better and stuff. Right?”

“Mm, maybe,” she snorted unpleasantly, and Tab wrinkled his nose. “Oh shut up, I’m allowed to be ugly when I’m upset.”
