Chapter 67

“Everybody, dance!” Allen and Elsie said as they waved their arms at their guests.

“Come dance with me, love.” Mary Ellen tugged on Eron’s hand.

Eron stared at Garrett and Johnette’s silent standoff. Who’d won the argument? Eron rubbed his finger where it had touched Garrett’s, the warmth searing through him.

“Aren’t you supposed to dance with the best man?” Eron said to her, not that he wanted Garrett to dance with her either.

“I’d rather dance with my date.” Her lips formed a playful pout.

“Not so soon, let me get some more liquid courage.”

“You are such a good dancer, Eron. What a waste.” With that, Mary Ellen ran over to her cousin Stephen and cajoled him onto the dance floor.

Eron lit a cigarette and sat back in his chair. He listened to the music, watched the couples sway to the tune, and drank his scotch and ginger. He chuckled at the folly of his and Garrett’s dance at the country club, but wanted nothing more than to reprise that performance.
