Chapter 41

Satisfied the burn was going well and the cane would be ready for harvest the next day, Theodore left the supervision of the burn in Emmanuel’s hands and the three men turned their mounts toward home.

“Are you looking forward to the party at the Gregor’s tonight?” Theodore asked Edgar with a wink at Seth.

“Yes, Edgar,” Seth chimed in. “I understand Mr. Gregor has a pretty young daughter who is of marrying age. What is her name again? Sarah?”

“No, Sally,” Edgar returned, blushing.

“Ah, so you are familiar enough to know the girl’s name,” Theodore teased.

“Well, someone is going to have to have sons to pass on the family name, as well as our plantation,” Edgar returned. “Lord knows that the two of you will not.”

They all laughed. Then Edgar said, “Seriously, I am hoping to begin courting Sally, if that is all right with you.”

Seth and Theodore looked at each other and smiled.
