Chapter 37

Zander made a call, and Theirn appeared five minutes later. He briefly acknowledged Caiden, only saying, “My car is parked behind the house.”

When they were on their way to his place, Caiden tried to strike up a conversation with Theirn, if for no other reason than the fact he needed to get his mind off Leander.

Glancing at him, Caiden asked, “How long have you been in the city?”

“A week.”

“From where?”

Theirn waved a hand. “Lots of places. I go where I’m sent.”

Caiden nodded, knowing he wouldn’t get anything more out of Theirn on that subject. So he asked, “How old are you?”

“How old do you think?”

“Mid-twenties, to look at you, but I know you’re older.”

“I was born in eighteen fifty.”

“Ah. Just before the War Between the States.”

“So I’ve been told. I wasn’t involved in that.”

“Of course not. You’d have been too young. From your name I’d say you’re French.”

“How clever of you,” Theirn replied sarcastically.
