Chapter 38

“Indeed it does. For now, though, how about we drop the subject of work. Dinner is ready and I enjoy it more when we talk about inconsequentials, like favorite books, or who, of all the candidates popping out of the woodwork, you believe will make a better president.”

“I think thatdiscussion would give us both heartburn,” Caiden replied as they went into the dining room to eat what turned out to be a very delicious meal.

“You summoned me?” Caiden said with a slight grin as he walked into Zander’s office.

“Was that joking I heard?” Zander asked. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you even close to smiling, to say the least jesting.”

Caiden lifted a shoulder as he sat. “I guess I’ve finally faced the fact that feeling sorry for myself is stupid. What happened…happened. It’s not the first time, and given how my life seems to go, it won’t be the last. Anyway, what do you have for me?”

Zander hesitated, as if he was reluctant to reply.
