Chapter 21

“Are you planning on staying in one of the motels in town?” the fire chief asked Daniel.

“I guess. I don’t really have much choice.”

“If you need a ride.”

“Thanks, but no. My car’s in the garage.”

“Then we’ll leave you to it. Remember to call me as soon as you hear from Mr. Ayers.”

“I will.” Daniel watched as the chief and Jack drove away.

As soon as they were out of sight, Griffin said firmly, “You’re coming home with me. Of course you’ll have to drive, unless you feel like a long nighttime hike through the woods.”

“You’re certain?”

“Yeah, I am. The last thing you need right now it to be alone after all you’ve been going through.”

Daniel bristled. “I’m not weak.”

“I didn’t say you were, but you’ve been attacked, that bastard tried to burn you out of your house, and who knows what else—” Griffin stopped talking and walked toward the garage.
