“And where is Mrs. Shocking today?” the client’s wife asked.

“I’m afraid she’s not feeling well, but I didn’t want to disappoint the boy.”

The answer satisfied the client and his wife and they were off. Later, while Peter played by the pond, Leander and Basil had the chance to talk alone.

“You were right,” Basil admitted.

Leander could hardly hear him over the noise in the park.

“I was right about what?” Leander asked, taking a bite of a sandwich.

“You were right that we can enjoy things like this and no one is any wiser to our romantic situation.”

“I’m glad you agreed to come with us today.”

“Even my client was nonplussed by our companionship.”

“Did you know about Emil and I before I told you?”

“No, I had no clue. No one did…does. Did you share a bed?”

Leander’s eyes brightened at the memory. “Yes, it was a great joy to wake up with him every day.”

“What did the housekeeper say when she noticed only one bed mussed each morning?”
