Chapter 9

As Jude stuck a bite of steak in his mouth, he put his fork down and stared rather intently at Rex.

“What?”

“It just occurred to me, you being a vet and all, you eat meat.”

Rex laughed. “Sure, many of us do. In fact, I’m friends with a vet who has a cattle ranch outside of Sacramento where he sells special, grass fed beef.”

Jude nodded. “Interesting. I guess I never really thought of it. It’s not like you’re eating doggies and kitties.”

“Definitely not.” He grimaced at the idea.

“Funny, not that long ago, maybe a year, I hooked up with a guy in a bar in San Francisco. He was half-Vietnamese and he’d just gone there to visit his mother’s family.”

“Oh, God, don’t tell me he tried dog?”

Jude smiled. “He did. He liked it besides. It’s pretty common there. I wouldn’t do it myself, but I try not to judge people and other cultures.”

“A wise outlook.”
