Chapter 26

Jourdain watched Luke coming toward the wall surrounding the plaza where they had met other times. He waited until Luke sat, his sign and cup beside him, before approaching.

He felt tension rolling off the boy and schooled his expression into a smile. What he really wanted to do was shake him, or worse, for going off with someone else the previous night. Especially since whoever had been driving managed to avoid Jourdain’s attempts to follow.

“I missed you last night,” Jourdain said casually, sitting beside Luke. “I planned on picking you up after your class to take you out to supper.”

Luke swallowed before replying, “Sorry. A guy I met in the class suggested we should study together.”

“A homeless kid has his own car?” Jourdain said, feigning disbelief.

“How did you know?”

“I got there barely in time to see you drive off.”
