Chapter 27

“You weren’t supposed to. If I hadn’t stopped him, you would have ended up in his home, and under his control, the same way…” Finn closed his eyes, as if he was remembering—or trying to forget. Luke couldn’t tell which.

“The same way?” he prompted, trying to come to terms with what Finn was telling him. Not that I believe him, because vampires are things of myth. Not real. But for some reason he believes Jourdain is one.

Finn leaned back, looking up at the ceiling. “I have a brother. Well, really a step-brother. Kelan was eighteen when his mother died. And then he met Jourdain. I was twenty-two. At first, I didn’t realize what was going on. After his mother’s death, Kelan became estranged from our family, except for me, because I took him under my wing. But I was four years older and working. I’d come home to an empty apartment. He’d show up, if he did, well after midnight, telling me he’d been out with friends.”
