“Surprised to see you out, too,” said Clark, and Kiko knew he would not be so fortunate as to avoid Clark’s prying.

“I try to stay out and active in the community.”

Clark leaned closer and offered a knowing smile.

“I mean about Karen, of course. Figured you’d want to take it easy after you heard her die. That is true, right? I hate believing lies. I know how sensitive people like you are.”

Kiko drank his cider, glad Dom hadn’t yet found his way over. The man was much less able to let things like this roll off him, although Kiko did find himself irritated. He didn’t know whether Clark was talking about his partner preference or his race, but the newsman was not showing the understanding he thought he was.

“Life goes on,” said Kiko.

“Well then,” said Clark, eyes lighting with greed. “If you’re not too upset about it, you’d consider sitting for a quick interview, right? Your name in the Observer. Free copy. Send it to your mother.” He paused. “Where did she move to again?”
