Chapter 44

“Get down,” Dom shouted at them, then, “Chad, tell them to get down.”

“Dom, talk to me.” Kiko’s voice was calm, firm, but the worry was clear there.

“Don’t come in,” said Dom into the phone. At least he could keep Kiko out of the shooter’s way. “Stay out, Kiko, please.”

He swallowed, then hung up. 13

“You bastard,” said Kiko into the phone. Just inside the doors to the barn, it was all he could do to keep himself from getting pushed out with the crowd. He backed himself against the wall and called Dom again; no answer. “You hung up on me?”

Kiko closed his eyes and leaned back against the splintery wood, shaking, trying to pull it together. He was far enough away from the crowd now that he wasn’t in any danger of being swept away with it, but he felt paralyzed. The gunshots he’d heard echoed through the phone were now real, at the far end of the barn, and Dom had hung up on him. It was too much like what had happened with Karen.
