“So the conspiracy is Gordon’s shooting people and covering it up.” Kiko pulled off a glove to rub at his forehead. Dom could see a little blood seeping through the man’s bandages and tried not to worry. He’d make sure Kiko used his hands less, starting tonight. “But why, Dom? Why does a cop who should probably be retired go on a shooting spree?”

“Because Karen hired him,” said Dom, pleased how this was all fitting together. Kiko rolled his eyes. “It fits—she said she hired a man. And when she didn’t like the murder, he got rid of her, too.”

“Why would Karen do that? Who would try to hire the police to commit their crimes? Not even Karen would have considered that. No, she’d go to someone safe. It’s not Gordon.”

“I think it’s a good theory,” said Dom, gesturing toward Kiko with his pipe.

“Dom,” said Kiko, sounding tired, “do you really think Gordon’s capable of running all around shooting people?”
