Chapter 59

“Hah! Knew it,” said Dom, taking a swig from his cup and making a face. Kiko frowned at him as they trudged into the patch, crunching over dying vines. Most of the unpicked pumpkins this close to Lucy’s house had been found by now and they were forced to go farther out.

“Knew what, exactly?” asked Kiko, unsurprised at Dom’s answer.

“Oh, come now, Holmes, you can deduce the situation as well as I,” said Dom, clamping down on the plastic pipe. “Young Chad is in love.”

“Don’t say that,” said Kiko, glancing back over his shoulder. Chad certainly looked it, the way his eyes lit up at an incoming text. “Let—just let things go naturally. Dom. Please.”

Dom eyed him as though unsure why Kiko would be so insistent on this point. Kiko sighed.

“Look, I don’t want to tease him. Don’t you think Evelyn hates us enough as it is?”

“You’re no fun,” said Dom, then bent to grab a pumpkin. Kiko sighed.
