Chapter 62

“Kiko, there are people getting shot in there,” he said. Both he and Kiko winced as another gunshot tore through the night air. No scream accompanied it. Dom’s heart was pounding hard; he was torn between too scared to act and too scared not to act.

“You can’t go in there. We can’t go in there. We’re not wearing protective gear, we don’t know what we’re doing—Dom, we don’t even know how to get around in the maze.”

Dom wrenched his arm free.

“We’ll remember which way we came. Can you really stand around waiting for the cops when maybe we can get a few people out?”

Kiko gnawed on his lip, thinking. Dom knew he felt similarly after everything. Kiko had heard Karen shot and couldn’t help her. He’d been in the barn shooting and could do nothing. And now, maybe he could. Dom felt that intensely; he suspected Kiko did too.
