“Well, there ya see,” Lex said. “Everyone knows ’im. Trent’s sure word would get back to the old man if it was thought he was screwin’ around with a guy.”

“Not likely,” Rio continued. He gestured to the fairgrounds in general. “Ya really think folks around here are talkin’ about us? Sayin’, ‘I hear that Rio fella is fuckin’ Lex Cunningham?’ ”

“It’s not what I think, Rio. It’s what Trent thinks. I tell ya, man, he’s paranoid as a mouse at a cat convention.”

Rio laughed.

“No, I’m serious. Ya shoulda heard ’im the other day when we talked about it. He was shakin’ like a leaf.”

The two men turned the corner to Barn B and walked toward Lex’s stall. There was a Supercab truck parked in front of it. Lex wondered whose it was. He didn’t have to wait long to find out.
