Hoping to change the subject, Rick asked, “Why don’t you like your mother’s boyfriend? What’s wrong with him?”

In the mirror, he saw Micah shrug one shoulder. “He’s fake.”

Now Rick didlaugh. “Fake? How?”

“Just…you know.” Micah shrugged again. “Acts like he likes what I like but can’t name one Pokémon. Not one!”

“Neither can I,” Rick reminded him.

“You know Psyduck,” Micah said. “And Pikachu. And Eevee. And Marty knows all of them, I swear. He does! He sang the theme song and that has all the original ones in it. Plus he knows all sorts of other stuff, too, like the evolved forms of them all and what types are weak against other types, and—”

“Okay, I get it,” Rick interrupted before his son could get too worked up. “Marty knows Pokémon and Mom’s boyfriend doesn’t. That isn’t a real reason not to like him.”
