Chapter 31

“I’d love to,” Cole had said, willing his eyes to convey their secret intent.

“Today is going so great!” Oliver had said another time.

“I love today so much! Every single part of it, I love.”

Oliver had just smiled broadly and winked.

Cole’s attempts with Wyatt had struck out just as miserably. He knew he had waited too long. Today was not the day for grand declarations of love. Everyone was too busy to take a moment to recognize what they had, what they wanted.

Once he came out of the back dressed as Santa, the children rushed forward screaming, “Santa! Santa!” Their tiny hands reaching out to grasp the hand of a celebrity. Cole tried his best to be animated and entertaining, but he knew this was the last thing he’d ever do on Earth. The look of adoration and wonder on the kids’ faces made him smile. There could be worst last things to do. Bringing hope to the innocent and fragile was a pretty good last act.
