Then Jon took my hand. “Believe you can and it will happen,” he said as he pulled me through the back wall of the dressing room. Brody was right behind us. He put his hand on my shoulder, gripping it while we walked to the edge of the parking lot behind the theater.

I can do this. If I want to find the killer, I have to leave here. I made those words my mantra as I put one foot over the boundary between the lot and the street. Closing my eyes, praying when I opened them I wouldn’t find myself back on the stage, I took another step.

“Told you,” Jon crowed.

I was standing on the street. I took another tentative step, then two more, so happy to be free I didn’t realize I’d walked into the path of an oncoming car.

“If you weren’t already dead, you would be now,” Brody said, laughing as I raced back to where he and Jon were standing. “Okay, let’s go talk to Sage.”
