Chapter 23

“Lily? No, the other kid. The bad one. Everyone thought it was her, especially when she disappeared and the robberies stopped.”

“Sarah had another child?” asked Kiko. He glanced at Dom, who shrugged. “Lily acted like it was only her when she spoke to us yesterday. She said she was handling everything.”

“Didn’t even complain about having to do it all herself,” said Dom. Joy shook her head, frowning.

“No, this kid disappeared and never came back. Alice, maybe, or Grace? Fifteen years old. Imagine being mixed up in all that.” She paused. “None of it was any good. I always suspected the other child was dead. The jewelry never showed up anywhere, after all, and the boyfriend proved he could kill.” She shrugged. “But no body, no proof.”

“Must’ve been difficult for Sarah all these years,” said Kiko. He’d known none of this, but it explained a lot, like how he knew so little about the family, even though they were local.
