Chapter 25

When he heard nothing he ducked his head around to find the place completely gone through. Boxes of stored decorations and spare products were strewn around, some covered in a light dusting of snow that had blown in. Packaging was opened and had blown about, the drawers on his tool chest had all been opened, the tools scattered. Even all the cans of spare paint he’d kept had been dumped; nothing having been left unopened or untouched.

“Hello?” he called, his word met only with silence. He didn’t really expect anyone to be there. He went to open Yolks on You and get out of the cold as he called to report it. For once he got a random deputy and not Gordon, someone who appeared irritated with him from the start.

“You need to lock up,” the officer said. He barely glanced over at Kiko. “People think it’s safe, but it’s best just to lock.”

“It was locked,” said Kiko. He was ignored.

“Any idea what they were looking for?”

“No.”
