“Hi, boss,” said a familiar voice, and then Chad was at the tables, yawning.
“Morning,” said Kiko, pushing aside his thoughts and channeling his pleasant manager persona. He’d need it today. “You look tired.”
Chad popped the tab on a gigantic energy drink and took a swig.
“Yeah, well, I like, didn’t get much sleep, and then I totally made Roy pancakes this morning because he begged for them before work, so.”
“Sounds like your Valentine’s date went well then.”
“Yeah, it sucks.”
“Why?” asked Kiko, then nodded toward one of Sarah’s boxes. “Start setting those eggs out on the second table.”
“Well, I mean it didn’t suck, but now it totes does. I took your advice and all, stayed in and made a blanket fort and bought one of those heart-shaped pizzas from Roy’s favorite place. We watched a couple movies. I even made a monkey bread thing for dessert, but it like, all got too real. Roy loved it.”
