“I’ve got my eyes on you,” Officer Druget said before leaving. “You lead your normal life. Don’t worry about Matthew Van Millerhowsen. This is a very nice area you live in, and we want it to stay that way. Know the Pittsburgh police have your back.”
Bullshit. Whatever. The police weren’t going to help me, and I knew it.
Being polite, I thanked her for her time, told her goodbye, and watched her climb into her city cruiser and drive away, unhelpful for all the wrong reasons, of course.
Jax arrived not even two minutes after the city police officer left. He looked flushed, was out of breath, and unshaven. The first thing he did after entering the house was hug me. The guy wrapped his arms around me, pulled me against his chest, and started to squeeze the life out me.
“I tried to get here as fast as I could.”
I kissed his neck, told him I was fine, but a little pissed off.
He pulled away from me. “What for?”
