Back in the break room, he fed the five dollar bill into another vending machine. The best he could do was two Snickers and a Payday candy bar. With luck, the peanuts would be enough protein to quiet his queasy stomach long enough to endure the rest of the class.
He took his seat again and dove into the first Snickers. When Vic was halfway through the bar, Kyle came back into the room, his laughter preceding him like a warning signal. Too late, Vic realized he should’ve chosen a different chair, somewhere as far away from Kyle as he could’ve possibly managed.
Kyle clapped Vic on the back as he passed. “Hey! Lunch of champions, am I right?” he joked, nodding at the candy bars in front of Vic. “Maybe you need to find you a man who can cook.”
The fire in Vic rose again, steaming his ears. He squeezed both hands into fists, pulverizing the rest of his Snickers. Don’t let him get to you,Vic told himself, picking the broken chocolate and caramel pieces from the wrapper.
