The next night found Matthew lying in bed. Checking his watch, hitting the wee button to illuminate the face, revealed it to be closing in on midnight. He fell back on the pillow, gaze boring into the ceiling. Resting on the other half of the bed was Roscoe. Daniel kept his promise, swinging by the day before with lunch and the sad ball of black fur. Roscoe whimpered the whole time Matthew pet him, tears once again springing to life. A little light returned to the gloom that shrouded the house. Ever since returning, wherever Matthew went, Roscoe followed, a four-legged shadow. They sought comfort in each other.

But things still felt wrong.

The void that was always within him remained, stronger than ever. And he figured it was the source of his insomnia. With a sigh, he sat up, throwing his legs over the side of the bed. Roscoe stirred, soulful brown eyes looking at him.
