What if it happened to his Uncle Jimmy? For months, he used to sneak down the hall at night to peek in at a slumbering Jimmy, terrified he might find Jimmy gone one day. And so he ran, deciding to avoid forming deep bonds, even keeping Heidi and Daniel at arm’s length. That way, if they went away, it wouldn’t hurt as much. To protect himself from an invisible monster, he hurt the people who cared about him the most.
