When they got out front, they froze. The car was gone. At that moment Wayne’s cell phone vibrated. He answered with shaking hands, fearing the worst.
“Move it, now,” Rae said. “I’m parked in the alley behind the Morrisons’ house.”
The Morrisons lived directly opposite Wayne and Lou. They raced to their yard and then around back, practically falling into the car when they got to it.
“What’s going on?” Wayne asked as Rae put the car in gear.
“While I was waiting, a dark SUV made two passes by the house. The second time, I saw it coming around the corner and got out of sight. I would have called you then, but if the house was bugged, I didn’t want you answering. So I moved the car and kept an eye open for you two.”
“You could have texted,” Lou said with some asperity.
“I wasn’t willing to take the chance you’d might not have put your phones on vibrate.”
“Okay, you’re forgiven this time, although we always do. Usually.”
