“Aniin!” he said, returning her greeting.
She sat down across from him. “Ginoondezgade na?“
“I guess we’re starting already,” Morgan said with a smile.
“We are,” Sarah said. “I asked if you were hungry.”
“Eya’,” Morgan answered, nodding.
Sarah raised her eyebrows and cocked her head.
Morgan shrugged. “I remember some words—from my childhood I guess.”
“Mino, good, that should make it easier.”
Katie arrived. “Hi, Sarah. Can I get you something to drink?”
“Eya’,” Sarah said, and continued to speak to Katie in Ojibwe.
Katie nodded enthusiastically and answered Sarah in kind.
Morgan looked from one to the other. “Whoa. I’m just on lesson one here.”
Sarah interpreted. “I told Katie I was going to help you learn the language and asked if we could speak Ojibwe for you. That way you’ll get familiar with the way it sounds.”
