I stuck the phone in my pocket. “Sorry to waste your time, Sheriff, but Ernie found Jonah out in the east pasture. They’re taking him to the hospital. We need to head back.”

As we turned the horses around, McMurtry said, “It wasn’t a waste, Lanice. I’m glad he was found before nightfall. I’ll go with you to the hospital.”

I looked at him. “Don’t you have crimes to solve?”

He smirked. “In this town? Searching for Jonah is the most action I’ve had in a month.”

“Well, if you’re sure…” I said.

“I am.”

“Okay.”

Nicholas followed behind my truck as I headed to the hospital later that afternoon, and he was at my side as I stalked up to the front desk and demanded information on Jonah.

Marcy Slade, the doctor on call, just happened to arrive at the same time. We grew up together, as was true for most of the people still living in this tiny town.
