Chapter 27

“I beg your pardon?”

“You don’t see it, do you?” he continued, wiping his hands on the napkins I’d provided.

I was confused. “See what?”

“You are a highly desirable man, Lanice Boudreaux. An upstanding citizen, giving more than you ever get in return, you wear your heart on your sleeve. Women and men fall all over themselves to get your attention, but you don’t see it.”

He ate the rest of his hot dog, then said, “I should know. I tried, when we were in high school, junior year. But you were oblivious to my interest, and I’m damned hard to miss, as you well know.”

Shock went through me. “You were…but why?”

“Why not? Anyway, I gave up on that and then after a few years went to work for the McMurtry ranch. The rest is history.”

“I had no idea.”

He just shrugged.

A few minutes later, I helped Bo feed the horses and then got ready to leave. “I’m sorry, Bo.”
