Chapter 55

AJ and Abby waltzed to a song he hummed—”Beauty and the Beast,” which even I knew. Then AJ and I did. He touched my wild hair.

“Maybe you should have been the lion.” Right up against his broad chest, he sang into my ear about old tunes and rhymes, his warm breath teasing me with each note and lyric. I hated the part where he spun me around. I got dizzy rather easily, but when he had me close enough to smell his scent and taste his sweat, my eyes closed. Imagining the perfect relationship I could actually envision now, I wondered if it would ever come to be.

“Your turn.” AJ reached for Major. Their dance was cut short by a ringing phone. “My wife,” AJ said after checking it. “Wondering where the heck I am.”

“Wife?” Abby asked.

“Mrs. Sowerberry. I have a different soul mate every few months, from one to another I bounce, with nary a glance back.”

“Sounds like me in real life, so everyone says.”

AJ smiled. Abby and Major went a different way.

“Too soon?” I asked.
