Chapter 11

“Mom said you told her you’re trying to get away from the big city life. Why are you surprised that someone could like living in a place like Middleton?”

“I’m not. Not really.” Erik bent to pat War’s head when the dog came to a halt directly in front of him. “I think I might enjoy living somewhere where the pace is slower and you can trust the people you know.” He smiled sourly at his final words.

“Sounds like you’ve had a problem with that,” Bill said as they started back toward the B&B.

Erik shrugged, passing it off by replying, “It’s part of living in big city. You meet people you wish you hadn’t.”

“I’m sure you do. Everyone does at some point in their life. You have to move on.”

“I am.” Erik was glad when they turned the corner and through the snowfall, he saw the lights of the B&B directly ahead of them. “What do you do if the power goes out?”

“We’ve got a propane generator behind the house. It kicks in if that happens.”
