Chapter 36

“Korean, right?” he asked, and I nodded. “Lisa and I grew up in a very mixed neighborhood. We hated moving, but it was cheaper over here, and it hurt less…the memories, you know?”

“I do. I mean, I still had my mom after my dad died, but I saw him in everything. It took a long time to get over that pain, and some days, I still feel it.”

“Sure.” He watched me for a minute. “Do you ever wear anything except a suit?”

“I’m always working, so, no.”

“Wow. We’re going to have to get you out, more.”

“Uh, we?”

“Yup. Lisa and I are going to kidnap you one day for an afternoon of fun.”

“You hardly know me.”

He grinned. “I know enough. Lisa really likes you, and she talks about you constantly, especially since last week. You’re like another brother to her, not that I’m jealous or anything. I think it’s cute.”

“Cute.”

“Yes. Like you.”

“Um…”

Lindsey laughed, and I hunched my shoulders. I was thirty-five damn years old. I should be over being the butt of jokes.
