Chapter 29

They went through each little box and made two little piles out of each, one on the lids and one in the boxes. Sixteen mounds of life to spread across the Station. Their best chance to get through it all.

“Let’s get started, then.” Turlach scooped up the chives and eggplant. “Shall we?”

The rest followed suit, playful arguments breaking out on who took what and how many for each little plot of ‘soil’ to drop their seeds in. Jason felt a little lightness in his heart. It felt good to start this business. It felt like hope.

“Wait.” John stalled them before they could break into teams. They stopped and turned to him, expectant. John cleared his throat and Jason bumped their shoulders together for the encouragement he saw John needed. John smiled, a little brittle, but honest. “I don’t believe in some power on high, orprayer, or any of that mess. That said, if any of you do, now would be the time to ask for all the help we can get.”
