Chapter 29

Eating took Sartin’s mind off his smarting tail. After Maru was done, he disappeared into the jungle and reappeared with fresh water from the sea. He drained the stale water from the makeshift pool and refilled it with new salt water. Once again, Sartin leaned his head back while Maru poured the salt water over him. The cold water soothed him. When they were done with the bath, Sartin figured out how to ask for the leaves.

“Need leaves near water,” Sartin said slowly. His throat ached from using it so much.

“You need leaves from near the water?” Maru was the one who did the parroting this time.

“Need for med-ah-sin.”

“Oh, you know medicine, too?”

“Mother healer.”
